Ideas behind Shift Shaper


With Shift Shaper I wanted to make a runner style platformer where the player could change  shape to traverse different obstacles avoiding enemy shapes and using gravity and physics to your advantage where possible.

The most challenging aspect of making the game was creating the physics rules that surround the ship as it changes shape, While in ball form the ship generates a lot of forward force and then changing back to square form at first caused all sorts of problems ... one of which was you could basically float along avoiding everything ..not too fun...

Lots of spaghetti coding and cups of tea later I managed to build around some of the oddities and even kept some strangeness in the game with a bit of tweaking. This was how the double jump was created and actually becomes one of the fun ways to control the ship ..after a while you can make the ship do some pretty interesting things bending gravity to your will!.

I think my ideas were realised and I was able to create a challenging and fun game .
